Stay positive about this Chiefs team

I am turning a new leaf this season. I have become an optimist. If you know me personally, then you will know that when it comes to sport I am normally a pessimist. That way you can avoid disappointment when your team performs as expected, but you still get the same high when your team performs well.

With my new found optimism I have a few reasons why the Chiefs season isn’t a lost cause, and we still stand a chance to win the Superbowl. Yes, that’s right I said it. This team can still win the Superbowl, even after conceding 125 points in 4 games.

The Chiefs are moving the ball well.

Through 4 games Alex Smith ranks 6th in passing yards, whilst Jamaal Charles ranks 4th in rushing yards. In total offense the Chiefs rank 12th. So to say this offense completely stinks would be incorrect. For the first 80 yards of the field the Chiefs are brilliant. It is in the endzone where they are found wanting. Too many times the Chiefs get to the endzone and abandon the run, a tactic that has to change now. Change it and touchdowns will come, or don’t change it and get used to a whole lot of Cairo Santos.

The schedule gets a lot easier.

We have just faced 3 unbeaten teams in the Broncos, Packers and Broncos. A tough ask for any team. Admittedly it would have been nice if we could have stolen one of these but it isn’t the end of the world. Our next four opponents are vs Bears (1-3), at the Vikings (2-2), vs the Big Ben less Steelers (2-2) and vs the Lions in London (0-4). One thing we have seen in the Reid era is that this team is capable of going on long winning streaks. We saw it in 2013 (9) and 2014 (5). There is still a real possibility of going into the bye with a winning record.

No one in the AFC looks like they want a playoff spot.

Only 4 teams hold a winning record in the AFC. Everyone else is either 2-2 or 1-3. Whilst the conference remains tight there is hope for this team to snatch a wildcard spot. A win on Sunday would mean 2-3 record for the Chiefs. The exact same record they held this time last year. I know we didn’t make the playoffs last year, but in the end it wasn’t our slow start that meant we missed the postseason. It was our shoddy end.

This defense has to get better. It can’t get any worse.

One year ago this unit ranked 2nd in points allowed. Through the first weeks of this year it ranks joint last with the Chicago Bears. (I am taking the over on points scored this weekend by the way).

The Chiefs defense needs to get rediscover its identity again, which is getting to the Quarterback.

Too many times did the Chiefs just rush 4 players giving Andy Dalton all the time he needed to find a receiver. This unit needs to go back to being aggressive because conservative simply doesn’t work with our players.
