10 reasons why the Chiefs can be a Superbowl team

1. Depth
Since the hiring of GM John Dorsey, one thing where the Chiefs have noticeably improved is depth. Dorsey has done a good job of drafting guys in the middle-to-late rounds to compliment the starters, while also doing a good job picking up guys like Jamell Fleming from the waiver wire. From running back to defensive back, the Chiefs have solid depth all over the field, and have a few guys that would probably get the chance to start on other NFL rosters. In fact, when final roster cuts are made this weekend, don’t be surprised to see a number of the Chiefs cuts get a long look from other teams. Compared to a few years ago the difference is huge, and during the long NFL season when minor injuries and drops in form are almost guaranteed, having solid depth will help the Chiefs minimize its affect.
2. We are in the AFC
I know some fans get conference proud but let’s not beat around the bush, at the top the NFC is a much stronger conference. Getting to the playoffs may be easier but once your there, boy does it get hard. I would much rather the Chiefs have to take on the likes of Indy or Baltimore, than the powerhouses that are Seattle and Green Bay.
3. Home-field advantage.
If the Chiefs can secure a home playoff game or two then anything is possible at Arrowhead Stadium. KC natives and the weather will create one of the hardest environments ever seen in January. And as for the 142.2db record, expect that to get smashed too.
4. We finally have a legitimate No.1 WR
So I don’t know if you were aware of this or not, but not a single Chiefs receiver caught a touchdown pass last season. That’s right, not a single one. You’d be forgiven for not knowing this, as absolutely nobody mentioned it at all during the offseason. Anyway, to address the issue of sub-par play from the wide receiver position the Chiefs went out and signed free agent wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, a player who Reid himself drafted while coaching in Philadelphia. Maclin does a lot of things very well. He has deep speed, but also is an exceptional route runner with some of the surest hands in the NFL. Calvin Johnson he may not be, but Maclin provides something the Chiefs did not have last season (and for many seasons prior), a guy who can consistently get open and make plays from the wide receiver position. Now Alex Smith finally looks to have his go-to guy on the outside, defenses can no longer focus purely on stopping Kelce and Charles, and that makes the Chiefs offense that much more dangerous.
5. The Giants won in London then won a Superbowl. Why can’t we?
Yep, that’s right! Someone has been to London for a game and had a good season after, although it doesn’t happen very often. In 2007 the Giants won the very first international series game against the Dolphins. It didn’t ruin their season. In fact just a few months later, Eli Manning was raising the Lombardi trophy.
6. Special Teams
One of the biggest difference makers for the Chiefs this year could be special teams. Credit has to go to Dave Toub, who has helped transform what was a somewhat shaky specials teams group when he arrived, into a consistent big play threat. De’Anthony Thomas is a regular threat to break to break off a big return, and Knile Davis and Chris Conley also have the potential to be solid contributors as well. If the Chiefs return game can continue provide good starting field position for the offense, while providing a big play every now and again, it could prove to be the difference maker in the close games.
7. Superbowl 50 – Let’s have a repeat game.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the 50th Superbowl was a repeat of the Superbowl 1? But with a score reversal of course. I bet the NFL marketing team are praying for this matchup. They would have a field day!
8. Peyton Manning IS OLD, not getting old
It is very obvious that Manning is already fighting off Father Time. Did you see some of his throws last week?! For Denver to succeed he needs to take a step back and let CJ Anderson take a lot of the work. We all know Peyton’s ego isn’t going to allow that! And If Peyton let’s his ego rule the team, then the division is there for the taking.
9. Jamaal Charles
Jamaal is the most underrated back in the league. IN FACT, I would go as far to say he is the most underrated player in the league. It will not be until after Jamaal retires, that people come to realise how good of a player he really was. He has carried this offense on his back for the last 3 years, and to say he has been incredible is an understatement. Now the offense has other weapons such as Maclin and Kelce, the team may finally be able to keep Jamaal fresh for a whole season. If that is the case and the team make the playoffs, God help opposing Defences in January.
10. Defence
No one outside of the Chiefs (bar a select few) is talking about the Chiefs D. When conversations about the league’s best defences come up, the Chiefs are barely mentioned. Well more fool them, because this group will one of the league’s elite units. The front 7 are terrific. The secondary could lockdown any receiver. If they can add more turovers, then we are in for a treat. 100% ready for a championship run.
